I accidentally ripped off the work of an artist I had never heard of: Lucio del Pezzo

Today I reverse image searched my artwork on Google Images. When I input the “Cosmic Energies” painting I came across a strikingly similar piece by Italian artist Lucio del Pezzo (1933-2020) titled “Casellario”, 1990. I was stunned, the more I look the more similarities I find. I wanted to share this discovery as an exercise and invite you to spend some time finding the similarities the two images share. I also included a “key” of my own, Enjoy :)

Lucio del Pezzo:
“the great metaphysician”:
(1933-2020)

He seemed like a swaggy character in his youth. I came across a tribute on Vouge Italia with photographs taken by Gianni Ummarino of del Pezzo in his home studio in Paris, in 1971

About del Pezzo, Ummarino writes:
‘He always seemed to me to be on the verge of passing into another space-time dimension . Perhaps also because the soundtrack that filled the house were Pink Floyd songs from "Ummagumma" and "Atom Heart Mother". In the write up Ummarino also referes to him as “the great metaphysician”.

His works are geometric, interested in symbolism rather than depicting anything concrete. To me, it feels adjacent to the work of artists who have dabbled in the realms of the mystic and the spiritual through abstract symbolic shapes, in line with figures like Hilma Af Klint and Wassily Kandinsky. There’s also something super Bauhaus-y, about it, it’s kind of teetering those two bridges, design and art/spiritual, but maybe I’m projecting.

I’ve included a few select finds here to spark your curiosity along with the photos of him in his home studio (LOVE looking at photos of artists in their environments).
